The article "The Sundowner Winds Field Experiment (SWEX) in Santa Barbara, CA: Advancing Understanding and Predictability of Downslope Windstorms in Coastal Environments" was published in BAMS, see Carvalho et al. 2024. In Spring of 2022, ten US institutions, including UC Santa Barbara, and National Center for Atmopsheric Research (NCAR) collected observational data in and around the Santa Ynez Mountains of Santa Barbara in Southern California. They investigated the atmospheric processes associated with downslope windstorms, locally known as Sundowners, which are known to intensify wildfires. The article gives an overview of the field experiment, preliminary findings, and future research potential.
